There are 38 species of dolphins of the family delphinade or oceanic dolphins, plus 4 species of River dolphins.

However,  new species were discovered in 2011 & 2014  giving a new total of 44 species.

New Species

During 2011, a new species, Burrunan Dolphin  (Tursiops australis) was discovered, adding one to the numbers above







In 2014 Sousa sahulensis, the Australian humpback dolphin, the fourth recognized humpback dolphin species was discovered
